Biography and Work History

Robert A. Bohrer was born in Chicago and raised in Seattle. He graduated from the University of Washington (1969) majoring in Economics and minoring in French. He received a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) degree from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1972 and was licensed to practice by the Washington State Supreme Court in 1973. He has personally appeared in litigation matters in most all counties of Washington State, all three Divisions of the Washington Court of Appeals and in the Washington Supreme Court. He has regularly appeared in matters before the Federal District Courts in Washington State and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He has appeared in other Federal Court jurisdictions pro hac vice, as special counsel in pending litigation. He has written and filed Amicus briefs with the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mr. Bohrer began his work in the field of employee benefits with a Seattle law firm specializing in that field. Before 1980, he also worked for a third party administration company serving joint labor-management employee benefit trust funds. As a co-founding principal, from 1980 through 2013 he has been in full time legal practice at the law firm of Ekman, Bohrer & Thulin where he has concentrated in representing joint labor-management plan trustees in litigation and general fiduciary and governance consultation.

His litigation experience and skills have concentrated on labor agreement enforcement (collections), plan subrogation claims, claim appeals and fiduciary matters. In addition to technical ERISA consultation matters, Mr. Bohrer has been committed to predictable plan governance by fiduciaries, development of trustee policies to establish institutional guidelines and memory, and emergency and security preparedness.
